Portland, Oregon – Oh My Goodness!

Welcome! Glad you could make it to Lynnross.com. Please send me a note so we can keep in touch. I will write you back right away: Jazzylynnross@Hotmail.com

The writing is on the wall. Keep Portland Weird. Out of curiosity more than anything, I looked the word weird up at Merriam-Webster. My favorite definition says, “of strange or extraordinary character.” Extraordinary indeed! Music (talented musicians, singers and dancers a plenty), Food (gourmet, farmer’s markets, local and fresh, amazing restaurants), Drink (wines, particularly Pinot Noir and countless delicious craft beers), Scenery (vibrant neighborhoods, gardens, gorgeous landscapes and waterfalls), Creative Arts (numerous weekend fairs and festivals, galleries,  street art including murals and sculptures). Beautiful people from all walks of life with a strong sense of community. Oh my goodness!

I truly could go on and on and on about what makes Portland so weird. I love exploring, and I have lived here for a few years, just a little south west of Portland – there’s so much to see an do.  I love it here!

Musically I have had the great pleasure and opportunity to sing at some wonderful private parties. Being crazy for jazz music, early on I went to some fabulous Jazz Jams and got to sit in with some fine musicians. The Jazz Jams are at Clyde’s Prime Rib Restaurant in Portland with Ron Steen. There’s another Jazz Jam with Tom Grant at Tommy O’s Pacific Rim Bistro in Vancouver, WA. There’s also a Jazz Jam in Hillsboro with Laura Cunard at Coyote’s Bar and Grill.

I hope you will come back and visit me here again. Or better still,…. hope to see you soon while I’m singing and dancing. Keep Portland Weird!

Alright! Wonderful! You’re here. Welcome to Lynn Ross dot com. Glad you made it. I would love to hear from you. Send me a note? Lynnrossjazz@gmail.com

I LOVE FRENCH FOOD!
For the first few months of this year, you could find me singing every Friday night at Le Provence, in Bucerias, Mexico. Le Provence is a French restaurant where Chef Eric Manifacier from Marseille, France, and his lovely wife Christiane Lauks, serve the most delectable French cuisine I have ever tasted. Everything Chef Eric makes is out of this world delicious and fresh – so of course, one immediately understands why reservations are a MUST. It’s a seasonal restaurant, but dining at Le Provence is like having your very own Personal Chef. Oooh La! La!

It was a wonderful experience! While singing on the terrace under the stars and beautiful moonlight, I found myself extra sensitive and grateful for the music. I had so much fun and it was always very romantic. My special song selection for the restaurant was that of traditional jazz and I also sang lots of these jazz standards with a latin flare. A perfect compliment for fine dining.

Bucerias, Mexico is full of wonderful surprises! It’s a quiet and quaint little village about 20 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, that’s still authentic Mexican. There’s soft sanded beaches, art galleries, studios and stores, health spas, great shopping, and amazing restaurants. Whatever your choice, casual dining or fine dining – the restaurants here in this little Mexican village are the biggest surprise of all! Whether you enjoy Mexican fare, Italian, Asian, Fresh Seafood, or French food, you are sure to be pleased. I love creative cooking! It was actually the fabulous restaurants that helped me fall in love with Bucerias, and why it is the perfect destination for Foodies like me. One of my favorite restaurants in Bucerias is Le Provence. Check it out!

Happy New Year Everyone! Welcome to Lynn Ross dot com. I’m really happy that you’ve made it here to visit with me. Please feel free to send me a comment, or just a friendly hello. I would love to hear from you.
Wow! A brand new year…. time sure flies when you’re having fun. Every time I hear the song Auld Lang Syne at midnight on New Year’s Eve, I get very teary-eyed. The song evokes emotions because the meaning pulls at my heart strings and makes me extremely grateful for days that have just gone by with family and friends. It makes the point that we should not forget each other. Music is powerful! My emotions also run high when I hear the Scottish bagpipes as I watch a parade pass by. They move me to tears as well.
I don’t know what 2014 has in store for me musically, but I feel compelled to sing more this year. Hope we get to see each other! I have learned a lot of new songs. In the meantime, I will spend the next three months in sunny beautiful Mexico…… just in time I might add…..Brrr.r.r.r.r – Alaskan winter temperatures can be brutal at times.
By the way,…. I just thought of something kind of neat. Auld Lang Syne originated as a Scots poem, written in 1788 by Robert Burns. My last name,….Ross,…. is of Scottish origin. Oh My! Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. Life is fascinating. Adios Amigos! Have a great year and let’s stay in touch.

Christmas Time Is Here!

Merry Christmas Everyone! Thanks for visiting Lynnross.com and checking it out. If you would like to be on my email list so we can keep in touch, simply send me an email to: lynnrossjazz@live.com It would be great to hear from you.

This Christmas I had a fundraiser where I sang Christmas songs and had a big raffle to benefit Neighbor To Neighbor, a community based non-profit organization that helps those who are not doing so well this time of year. They put together boxes of food for a nice Christmas dinner and a few other meals. They also give the children a present. It was a very successful event and everyone had a fun time.

I was also pleased to give the gift of music with a Jazz and Christmas Song performance at Sunday Brunch for Raven Landing, a new seniors residence complex in Fairbanks. Their smiling and appreciative faces warmed my heart.

This holiday always conjures up fond childhood memories and family traditions. The timeless songs that we get to sing for just a short period, help to get us into the Christmas spirit and they add to magic of the season for the young, and the old alike. Christmas makes us noticeably more giving, more grateful, loving and kind to our family, friends and even strangers

Christmas comes just once a year, and there’s a great line in one of Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown Christmas songs called, Christmas Time Is Here, that I really like. It says,”Oh that we, could always see, such spirit through the year.”

I love Christmas!

On A Personal Note……..

Singing with Good FellowsWelcome to Lynnross.com. I’m glad you’re checking things out. If you would like to be on my email list, please send an email to Lynnrossjazz@live.com – I would love to hear from you!

This past year has been one where the sights and sounds of many different places have tickled and inspired me to no end! Lots of travel, means lots of first-time experience for me. Though visiting family and friends (and making new friends), was the main highlight of the year – there were all kinds of explorations and adventures to be had.
I visited Seattle, WA, then Vancouver, BC, Canada, then back to Alaska. Christmas in Ontario, Canada with my grandchildren was wonderfully heartwarming! They grow up so fast. I had a grand New Years Eve Fireworks party on our frozen pond in Alaska. The weather was perfect that night and we had a huge bonfire as well. Next was gorgeous Bucerias, MX for a couple of months. While there, I met and performed a few songs at the St. Patrick’s Day Festival with a brilliant guitar player from Washington, Geoff Wilkes. What a talent! It was so much fun, I could have sung all night! After a beautiful summer in Alaska, which included a very successful One-Woman Cabaret-style performance for a fundraiser benefitting Fairbanks Breast Cancer Detection Center, I was able to visit with my friends in Las Vegas for a month. Whew! What a month it was! A couple of high points for me were, joining the Victorian Railroad Ladies (a charitable group supporting children’s education) for a luncheon, and photo shoot at Lake Las Vegas, and the other was sitting in to sing with my friends, the Vegas Food Fellas.

I have been living in Alaska for the past couple of years, enjoying the natural beauty everywhere. Yes, it is more than a bit chilly. especially compared to the desert of Nevada – but makes for a beautiful scenic backdrop for my Christmas music photographic video. Check out my YouTube Channel at: Lynn Ross Las Vegas.

ALL ABOARD! Yes, I went on a fabulous 10 day cruise through the Panama Canal with my husband, Garth. It was on the ms Zuiderdam with Holland America. We got off the ship at almost all ports and took in all the sights. We left Ft. Lauderdale and went to Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, then Oranjestad, Aruba. then Willemstad (Curacao) Antilles, then through the fascinating Panama Canal, then heading back we stopped at Lima, Costa Rica. Besides seeing the 6 different ports of call in one trip, we were invited to a private cocktail hour and then dinner with Captain Christopher Turner. What an honor that was! I also had the pleasure of sitting in and singing one night with the Hal Cats, the cruise ship band. Overall, it was one of the best travel experiences of my life!

Lynn Ross on the Universal Lanuage of Music

Gonna rustle up tunes!

Gonna rustle up some great tunes!

YOU’RE HERE! How Wonderful! Hello everyone! Welcome to LynnRoss.com I would absolutely love it if you sent me an email to: Lynnrossjazz@live.com to say hi, and also let me know that you would like to stay in touch. That would be great!

A good song, is a good song, is a good song. Right? What’s your favorite music? Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Classic Rock, Standards, Country, Show Tunes, Folk, Latin, Classical? Traditional Jazz is my favorite, but I love to sing it all!

How could any of us possiby enjoy just one type of music when there’s so many fabulous genres to choose from? One thing for sure – I look at music as the Universal Language. Even if one did not understand the English lyrics of a song, it is still possible to enjoy the melody and the beat; the music.

Because music is so very personal and powerful for us individually, it can evoke many emotions and my favorite one is happiness. Music speaks to me!

As defined on Definition.com, “Music is an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner.”

Simply put, music is a Universal Language. Don’t you agree?
I can’t wait to speak with you!

Happy New Year from Lynn Ross and Announcing PBS Splendor in the Glass!

It’s early January 2012 and as I sit sipping hot coffee and looking out over the tundra here in Alaska, I wonder what this New Year brings with it. I’m sure you must be thinking,…from the desert to the snow? Brrr.r.r.r.r. Let’s not forget I’m originally from Canada, and love the snowmen just as much as the cactus. It is so very beautiful and peaceful here in Alaska, and I am filled with anticipation and excitement of the wonderful musical experiences to come in 2012. Lots of travel, that’s for sure.
For starters I will be singing at the Onyx Restautant, Fri. Feb. 10th, 6 – 9pm. I love this restaurant and have been singing here quite often for almost 2 years. The friendly Management and Staff really care about you, and the food prepared by Chef Rey is delicious! There’s also a very cool bar where you can enjoy your favorite drink. Onyx Restaurant, 7770 West Ann Road, Las Vegas, NV 89149

Then on Sat. Feb. 11th, I will perform with my jazz quintet featuring Gary Queen on Guitar, Gary Anderson on Sax, Jeff Davis on Bass and John Plows on Drums, at the PBS 23rd annual fundraiser called SPLENDOR IN THE GLASS. What a treat! Some of the most talented and fabulous musicians in Las Vegas! HIT PARADE

Hi Everyone! You’re here! How wonderful! Welcome to LynnRoss.Com. I love that you are here and think it would be great to keep in touch with you. Please send me a quick hello with your email address, here at the site or at my email address which is lynnrossjazz@live.com Can’t wait to hear from you!

Even though it is still very hot here in Las Vegas, summer is almost over. It has been a great summer musically and I would like to send a special Thank You to the Owners, Management and Staff at The Onyx Restaurant, Elements Kitchen & Martini Bar, Casa Di Amore Restaurant and La Scala Restaurant (Oh, and thanks to my supportive, dear and talented friend, singer Larry Liso for the introduction). Thank you all for being so nice to me. It was a pleasure to sing for you and your Guests!

Another highlight for me this summer was a Guest Performance I did in the afternoon show, HIT PARADE, at the Suncoast Casino, Thurs. Aug.25th. Wow! A fast moving and entertaining variety show. It was so much fun I didn’t want it to end! Seriously, you remember the song from My Fair Lady,… I Could Have Danced All Night,… well, that’s how I felt. I Could Have Sang,…. and Danced all Day! Ed Mathews, a very friendly and gracious man who really knows his stuff, is the Producer. Ned Mills, star of the show Leonardo, is the Musical Director and the two Hosts of the Hit Parade the day I performed, were none other than the fabulous and very popular singer, Ronnie Rose, and long time Las Vegas Entertainer and local TV Personality, Tony Sacca. My duet with Ronnie Rose is a memory that I will cherish, and will linger with me for quite a while as I simply love to sing with other people who have great voices. I suspect it is the same for musicians with their instruments. HIT PARADE The Show. What a blast! Check it out everyone.

Hi Everyone! You’re here! How wonderful! Welcome to LynnRoss.com. I hope you will send me an email and join onto my email newsletter. I would love to be able to keep in touch with you. Send me a hello note to: lynnrossjazz@live.com.

OK. Time to get back to work, although it rarely feels like work when I am singing and dancing around Las Vegas. I absolutely love Jazz music as you all know, but lately I have been really digging songs of the 60’s and 70’s. I have added lots of new songs to my repertoir, and it is so much fun when people sing along, and enjoy the great memories of their yesterday – I think I will continue to add more!

I would absolutely love to see you!
Here are my public performances for the near future:

Fri. Jul 15th, Sat. Jul 23rd,
Sat. Aug.6th and Fri. Aug.19th
7 – 10pm
The Onyx Restaurant
7770 West Ann Road
(just off I-95 at Ann Road, inside Bogey’s)

This is a very cool spot in the northen part of the city. This party place features a beautiful Fine Dining Restaurant – The Onyx, which serves Continental Cuisine, has a beautiful bar, gorgeous decor and a very friendly staff. Here you will also find Bogey’s Bar and Grill which features 24 hour gambling at the Video Poker machines. Another facility is The Sweet Spot Event Center (an Outdoors party area) . Right now there is a Summer Concert Series going on. Check out the Reggae band, Black Onyx, on July 16th, admission is only $10. These great concerts are also helping a fantastic charity that is dear to me – S.A.F.E.House. They do so much to help!

Mon. July 25th,
Le Tour De France A special Event, 7 course dinner – SOLD OUT!
Elements Kitchen and Martini Bar
4950 S. Rainbow Blvd.
(S.E. Corner of Tropicana and Rainbow)

This is a very exciting event for me. I am thrilled that I have been invited to perform at this special French Dinner Event, and I will sing 2 or 3 Jazz songs in French in honor of the occasion. Ooh La La!

Martini Anyone?
Elements Kitchen and Martini Bar has a Martini menu of more than 318 Martinis to choose from. Amazing! But that is not the best part – it’s the food! Yes, this is a beautiful fine dining restaurant. The chefs and owners are Catherine and Jose Louis Pawelek who are as passionate about food as I have ever witnessed! “Our menu is what happens when you take Tropical Floribbean, Flavorful Asian, Wood Grilled South American and the Classics, and create a fusion of flavours and styles with a dose of fun. We call it Comfort Food with a Touch of Sophistication,” says Chef Jose Louis. Yummmm.m. I can’t wait to eat!

Mon. August 8th, 15, 22nd and Sept. 5th, 6:30 – 10:30
Casa Di Amore
2850 East Tropicana Ave.
(Tropicana and McLeod)

I love this Restaurant/Lounge and have a soft spot for it in my heart. It was one of the first places that I sang at here in Las Vegas, on a semi regular basis – almost 10 years ago! While the city has gone through a lot of changes, Casa Di Amore has kept the “Old Las Vegas” flavor that I love so much! It is a Southern Italian Supper Club. The Italian cuisine is delicious. This authentic Las Vegas hot spot features 24 hour gaming on the machines, and the very talented Entertainer – George Bugatti. George is the real deal! He sings and plays the keyboard, Wed – Sat. If you like a vintage Vegas feel, check out George Bugatti at Casa Di Amore! Come see me too!

Well, I will sign off for now. I sure do hope to see you. What’s your favorite song? Bet I know it!

I Love Las Vegas!

Mary Wilson at the Riv

You’re here. How wonderful! Welcome to Lynnross.com. I love Las Vegas. The main thing I love about it, is the wonderful entertainment available on any given night. I love it all – the music, the dancing, the lights, the costumes, the energy. There are big shows, little shows, big names, little names, big acts, little acts and everything in between. Recently I have gotten to see some great shows and meet the stars.
Some highlights are:
Mary Wilson of the legenday Supremes, at the Riviera, brought me to tears with her rendition of the song Here’s To Life. Mary Wilson with her beautiful voice at 67 years old, is like a ball of fire- an amazing entertainer with the right amount of elegance, style and grace.
If you love the Beatles like I do, check out The Beatles Show at Saxe Theater inside Planet Hollywood. You will not be disappointed! Four very talented performers: Steve Craig as John Lennon, Adam Joel as Paul McCartney, Glen McCallum as George Harrison, and Tony Feliceltta as Ringo Star. The show actually gave me goosebumps. What can I say, it was The Beatles Show!
Also at the Saxe Theater is my most favorite show. Vegas, The Show is without a doubt the best musical variety show in Las Vegas. It has something for everyone, moves at a nice captivating pace, has a an incredibile band led by Jerry Lopez (of the very popular group – Sante Fe)and has some extraordinary talent. For instance, Sean and John Scott are handsome young identical twin tap dancing brothers. Adorable! I couldn’t choose between looking at their gorgeous faces or their feet. Their feet won out. Amazing! And speaking of dancers – Tara Palsha is in the show and is absolutely stunning. A young Cyd Charisse if ever there was one. Tara has beautiful dancer legs and knows how to use them. The show is filled with wonderful singers like Eric Jordon Young, Trina Johnson and Lou Gazzara, just to name a few.

The V Theater is at Planet Hollywood as well, and here I saw the show, Hitsville, starring the fabulous Jin Jin Reeves. What an amazing entertainer! If Motown is what you’re after – it doesn’t get any better.
Another great afternoon show at V is called PIANO and stars Ryan Ahern. Ryan is an extraordinary piano player. He will not only dazzle you with neat versions of your favorite songs, but will treat you to some of his. You will be in awe of this young virtuoso.
I took in Viva Elvis, at Aria and needless to say I got all shook up! Non-stop energy as is usual for the Cirque du Soliel shows – but I think this one is different than any other. Great dancing, set design and costumes! It made me feel like I got to know Elvis a bit more and in a unique way. It was indeed a thrilling show to see.
Another thrilling and high energy show is Human Nature at the Imperial Palace. Again the songs are from Motown but this has a flavor all of it’s own. The singing and dancing makes you want to jump on stage. Four very talented Austrailian men take us back to Detroit Michigan. They are Andrew and Michael Tierney, Toby Allen and Phil Burton.

Oh Yes! Some other great and legendary Entertainers I have been fortunate to see and hear are: Gladys Knight, who now has her own theater at the newly renovated Tropicana. She was amazing, and her brother Bubba has the sweetest and friendliest personality one could ever experience! He’s so much fun! Barry Manilow at Paris was everything I knew he would be, after all, “He Writes The Songs.” Fabulous! And Englebert Humperdink at the Orleans proved he is not only still a heart throb for us women, but still can sing a pretty melody as if it is meant just for you. Wonderful!

I could go on and on and tell you about all the other great stars I have enjoyed this last little while here in Las Vegas – but I will stop for now. I will tell you about it another time. In the meantime…. see you at the show!

UNLV Jazz Appreciation Workshop

Jazz Appreciation at UNLV
Today I had the distinct pleasure of presenting my “Yesterday’s Ladies of Jazz” Music Commentary, to a wonderful group of jazz enthusiasts at the University of Las Vegas Nevada. I was able to share the lives and music of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan in an entertaining and educational format. With the very supportive and beautifully melodic John Falbo accompanying me on guitar, I was able to move from one Jazz Great to the next effortlessly. As well as singing their wonderful songs, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of highlighting the trials, tribulations and jazz music contributions of these three Great Ladies of Jazz.
The weekly UNLV Jazz Appreciation Jazz Workshop is on Wednesday, facilitated by Wayne Echt and Chuck Carter. For more information contact Wayne Echt at: wizardofjazz@aol.com

It’s raised above ground level and you sit amongst an array of lights from the neighboring casinos – very modern and chic, with just the right atmosphere. I will be singing with the Bobby Barnes Band featuring Bobby Barnes on saxophone, Walter Cunningham on keys, Chris Coleman on bass, and Paul Stubblefield on drums. Tuesday, Oct. 19th, 26th, Nov. 2nd, 9th, and 16th. 9pm to Midnight, The Rhumbar is located at 3400 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89109
